Students in the Business of Service (SIBS), is a non-profit, 501c3 certified organization that provides work experience which empowers students to excel in school, engage in the community, and develop life and leadership skills. With oversight from an administrator, SIBS is operated by the students who attend Cal Coast Academy. Since 2007, SIBS has been partnering with Rady Children's Hospital by providing handcrafted decorative pillow cases and neonatal swaddling blankets for the 143,000 sick and injured children who are receiving care through the hospital annually. SIBS students not only hone their public speaking skills by delivering presentations at local businesses to solicit community support, but they also sew and deliver each and every item they create.
"My conception for this community outreach program was to develop an avenue whereby our students are exposed to the world of business while they experience the value of giving to those less fortunate," says Ms. Jan Dunning, director and founder of Cal Coast Academy's SIBS program. "This has been an extremely rewarding experience for all participants while we brighten each recipient's stay at the hospital. Rady Children's Hospital has been an exceptional partner and we are honored to be associated with them."
You don't have to be a big corporation to make a big difference. Our students' dedication along with business donations, impact so many of San Diego's young people. Rarely does a single donation serve two beneficiaries; teens who need to feel that they are an integral part of our community through their contributions, and the young patients at Rady Children's Hospital.
Jan Dunning - Founder/President
Jan Dunning began her 37 year teaching career instructing for two local
school districts, Carlsbad and San Dieguito Union High School
Districts. In 1997 she began the first tutoring company in San Diego
County, North County Tutoring Agency, followed by the first off-campus
credited high school courses in the late 1980's. In 1997, she opened
Cal Coast Academy, a private school in Solana Beach which serves
students who desire or need tailored education and/or customized
scheduling. In an effort to prepare the student body at Cal Coast
Academy for life while they give back to our community, Ms. Dunning
created the student-operated 501.c3, Students in the Business of
Service (SIBS).
Glen Blavet - Vice President
Glen Blavet has been a plumbing contractor for over 20 years, and for
the last 18 years he ran his own plumbing, heating and air conditioning
business. At one point he had over thirty employees, and he had major
contracts with the U.S. Government and large telecommunication
companies. During this time he belonged to, and was on the local Board
of Directors of the Plumbing, Heating and Cooling Contractor
association, knows as the PHCC. For two of those years, 1999 and 2000,
he served as the President of the PHCC of San Diego. His duties
included handeling the finances and day to day operations of the
association. he also organized and ran the monthly meetings, yearly
golf tournaments and a few yearly parties. These events always
involved doing some form of fundraising for the PHCC, and to raise
funds for the scholarships that the association would give to deserving
students and tradesmen.
While Glen's two sons were in elementary through high school, he was
very involved in their school, sport and art booster clubs and
fundraising efforts. The list of the things he did for his son's
schools and clubs are numerous. They include contributing and helping
to establish a garden for his son's elementary school, and serving as
the President of the Coral Department booster club at his other son's
high school.
Glen is currently involved in a few new start-up companies. He is a
true entrepreneur, with the knowledge and experience to be successful
at whatever he is involved in.
Mary Jane Fredericks - Treasurer
Mary Jane Fredericks is not only an advocate of community service, she
has spearheaded countless projects for the San Diego community and
neighboring communities over the past two decades. Monthly trips to
Mexico provided Mary Jane the opportunity to bring supplies to the
residents and cut hair, while her husband, John, an emergency room
doctor, saw to the medical needs. The Fredericks have also opened
their homes to children and young adults who have needed a place to
call home, a meal, or simply someone to confide in. While Mary Jane is
active in community service, she also operates her own interior design
business, "Faux Real". Creating designs that are "out of the box" are
Mary Jane's specialty.
Though Mary Jane has spent considerable time serving others in the
