A Cal Coast Academy teacher is someone who is passionate about his or her subject matter, and committed to helping young people grow into responsible , well-educated, mature young adults.

Michael Carley - Spanish, Economics, and Mathematics

Michael joined our Cal Coast Academy instructional staff this year and brings with him a wealth of global knowledge. As a graduate of San Marcos State University, Michael earned his B.S. in Business Administration with an emphasis in Global Business Management. Integrating his extensive world-travel experiences, Michael infuses into the classroom fresh, global perspectives through unique and inspiring lessons. Recreationally, Michael can be found volunteering to educate upper-grade children at Birch Aquarium in La Jolla, surfing, skating, snowboarding, or participating in various earth and wildlife preservation events.

Katy Clarke - Science, Mathematics & Surf PE

Katy, who directs our Science Department has a B.S. in Zoology/Biology and significant field experience. She has spent time designing research protocols and conducting field investigations on tropical biology in Costa Rica. She has worked with Escondido's Eco-Life Foundation and has been an active member of the Urban Interface Risk Management Research Team since 2004. During her three years at Cal Coast, Katy has taught chemistry, AP Chemistry, biology, AP Biology, middle school life, earth and physical science, various math courses and Surf P.E.. Katy's extensive knowledge in the science field in addition to her passion for the subject excite her classes.

Renee Dunn - Algebra

Renee has come to us this 2008-9 year from Washington state where she has taught for three years. Renee acquired a B.A. in Liberal Studies with an emphasis in Education and then subsequently obtained a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from San Diego State University including an English Supplemental Degree. Since that time Renee has accrued 30 semester units of Graduate Studies. Currently, Renee teaches algebra at Cal Coast and instructs at one of our private "home schooling" sites as well.

Katie Huetinck - Photography, Yearbook & Sewing

Katie came on board mid-year of 2006 to assist a newly-enrolled student who needed individualized attention. She was so effective, we asked her to stay. Katie continues to work 1:1 with students in need, but is also conveying her knowledge, passion and artistic eye as our photography teacher. Katie's beginning photography course received such accolades from our students that she developed the curriculum to accommodate a Photography II course as well. A natural progression from the interest in photography was naturally a yearbook course, so Katie directed the production of our 2007-8 yearbook. Finally, Katie is teaching our Sewing II class. Katie has a B.A. in Liberal Arts, a multiple subject CLAD emphasized teaching credential and a Master of Arts degree. Katie is a wonderful contribution to the school.

Cheryl Sloane - Government, Economics, AP U.S. History & AP Government

Cheryl comes to Cal Coast Academy with a long resume replete with qualifications and experience. She received her B.A. in History Education in 1969 and has been preparing students in honors and AP courses ever since. She has taught AP European History, AP U.S. History, AP U.S. Government, AP Comparative Government, Honors World History and U.S. History. Cheryl served as social studies department chair for the Los Angeles Unified School District from 1987-2005 when she moved to San Diego. A few of Cheryl's long list of accomplishments include: creating materials for "Homeroom Project for Stanford" from 1998-2002, teaching International Relations through the National Academy of Finance, and membership in California Senate Commission for Education from 2001-2003. Cheryl became disenchanted with the large public school classes, and finds Cal Coast's small-class effective teaching refreshing.

John Hickey - Science, Mathematics, and ACT/SAT Prep

John has nestled into Cal Coast Academy this year as our premiere mathematics teacher. Having been associated with Cal Coast Academy as a substitute teacher and as an after-school tutor, John has established himself as an invaluable instructor. John earned his B.A. from the University of California, San Diego in 2006 and has since dedicated his talents to the educational field. An avid sports fan, John likes to spend his recreational time engaging in basketball and football.

Sacha Salazar - English, and Economics

Sacha began at Cal Coast Academy this year as an English and Economics teacher. As a graduate of George Washington University and Vanderbilt University, Sacha has earned her Masters of Education (Secondary) and B.A. in Latin American Studies, respectively. In addition to her teaching experiences, Sacha was formerly an Intelligence Officer Captain for the United States Air Force and a Project Management Professional. Cal Coast Academy welcomes Sacha and the vast experiences and talents she brings to our students and school community.

Susan Vanzanten - History, English, Public Speaking, and Learn on Location Director

Susan has been an educator at Cal Coast Academy for three years and teaches multiple subjects. In addition to her daily instruction, Susan is the coordinator for Cal Coast Academy's Learn on Locationprogram. This unique program provides Cal Coast Academy students with the exciting opportunity to travel, Nationally and Internationally, and broaden their understanding of the world. A graduate of Point Loma Nazarene University, Susan earned her B.A. in Liberal Studies, CA Multi-Subject Teaching Credential, and ESL Certification. In the 1980's, Susan began working as a coordinator for Cal Coast Academy's affiliate, North County Tutoring Agency. As a dedicated advocate of education, Susan is an engaging educator who promotes the highest educational standards and has an amazing rapport with her students.
